A while ago I talked about some health concerns I had in regards to switching one of my medications. The main concern was high blood pressure (now totally normal since going back to the old medication) and a smaller concern was weight gain.
Since switching back to my old meds, my weight has stagnated at the higher number (boo); I’m working with my doctor to determine if there’s a reason other than silly medical side effect (I’m actually going for blood tests today).
Since I refuse to not do my own research, I turned to Dr Google and learned the following:
- The type of medication I am on can affect how the body processes iodine. The medication I am taking has shown that it can cause iodine deficiency in the body. Since iodine is needed for proper thyroid function, a deficiency can result in subclinical hypothyroidism, meaning test results will be fine, but my metabolism will not.
- Appetite vs. hunger. The medication I am on is also known to increase appetite, but not hunger. Appetite being the desire to eat, but not being hungry, or actually needing to eat. Since finding this out, I’m working to be mindful of what I eat and if I’m eating due to hunger, or because I’m bored or want to eat.
Today I’m showing you what I ate yesterday, with commentary on whether I was eating because I wanted to, or because I was hungry.
Coffee (not pictured) and a smoothie.
I’m usually moderately hungry when I wake up because I haven’t eaten in hours, so even if I’m not super hungry, I’m sure to eat. Otherwise, it won’t take long for the hunger monster to appear.
I’m not sure if I eat my 10am snack because I’m hungry, or out of habit. I’m also not sure if I care all that much. It’s not overly high in calories and I enjoy it.
I discovered couscous salad at Costco a few weeks back, and I’m basically addicted. I tend to tire of lunches within 4 days, but I’m on week 3 of similar lunches and loving it.
I topped it with a can of tuna for protein and some hummus because hummus was delicious.
Since I ran 4 miles at lunch, I was definitely hungry and in need of refueling.
S’mores frapp from Starbucks. Why?! Because I can. Also – cookie straw.
My 12 mile run turned into a 4.5 mile run due to the heat and my cold (not that I’d ever complain about summer-like temperatures, my body just isn’t used to running in them yet) so I had time to cook a lazy dinner.
Half of a massive chicken breast (thanks to SPUD!) on Costco seven superfoods salad. And bagel chips while I was waiting for the chicken to cook.
Do you find yourself eating out of boredom or because you want to? Or are you good at following your hunger cues?
