Six days ago, I met up with some Alberta Blog Squad ladies to take a boxing class at UNDRCARD in Calgary – my first ever boxing class! 😲
Years and years ago, I was a pretty big UFC buff. When we got together with friends, any questions about the history of fights, who won, who lost, etc was directed my way. Now, it’s been a while since I’ve paid much attention to the UFC (with the return of GSP that may change…..at least for one fight) but boxing seemed like a fun way to reconnect with that love.
UNDRCARD’s website says it’s “where fight club meets night club meets community hub” and after experiencing the space and a class, I have to say that’s all true.
Our visit started by purchasing wraps (if you don’t already own wraps, you’ll need to purchase them for $8 and trust me, you do not want to share!) and selecting our bag. All bags are numbered so similar to other boutique fitness classes, you get to pick a spot to be yours once you get in the room.
After we had spots and wraps, we found lockers (free with electronic locks) to stash our coats (it was a chilly night!) and got to figuring out how in the heck to wrap our hands. There’s a video screen that walks you through how to do it, and helpful staff who will also wrap your hands for you if you’re new. I was brave and had a staff member wrap one hand and then I did the other. It definitely wasn’t as pretty, but years of wrapping my numerous injuries helped. I also had a go at wrapping Brie’s hands, and I don’t think I totally screwed it up, so that’s a plus!
UNDRCARD recommended arriving 30 minutes early for first timers, and that’s about the right amount of time, especially if you’re a newbie and haven’t had your hands wrapped before.
Tip: put your hair in a pony tail before wrapping your hands, and have a water bottle you can open without needing to take your gloves off, it’ll help once the gloves go on.
Once the room opened up, we made our way to our bags and stashed our waterbottles (and phones) to the side of the room. Since we weren’t in a private class, we didn’t use our phones during the class, but stayed after to take some pictures – bloggers gotta blog!
The class starts with a warm up and a walk through of the six punches (UNDRCARD also has a Boxing 101 class for first timers – I’m planning on taking this before more classes – and I will be taking more classes!) shadow boxing style with no gloves. This was a good way to figure out how to move your body (I’m sure I could use some work) without fussing about the bag or gloves.
Next we moved into a defense move and put it all together (or, in my case, attempted to put it all together) into some combinations.
At least now when I’m watching UFC and hear the coaches yelling out numbers I’ll know what punch they’re calling for. 😉
Then it was time to put our gloves on and start hitting the bag. This is where the class got really fun.
I’m far from an aggressive person, and I really don’t have a mad face, but there’s something about hitting a bag that’s unbelievably cathartic. I’m sure my stance was wrong, and my punches weren’t great, but regardless I was sweaty, and happy, and left feeling like a complete badass.
See? No mad face to speak of.
Since we were in the last class of the night, we were able to stick around to take some pictures and also score some goodies with the gals from SportChek Women who were at UNDRCARD promoting the first SportChek Women’s store opening tomorrow in Calgary. (I have a sneak peek of the store this evening, so I’ll be back on Friday with the scoop!).
I was expecting my shoulders to be sore after punching, but instead I could feel it like whoa in my lats the next day. Did you know you use your lats when you run? Well, if you run two days after you box, you’ll know that for sure.

Finally, two things unrelated to this post:
- Thank you thank you thank you thank you to everyone who read, shared, and commented on yesterdays post. I’m not someone who ever feels comfortable asking for money or fundraising for myself, but when it’s for a friend I’ll bug the heck out of you 🙂
- My second article for Food Bloggers of Canada was published yesterday. If you’re feeling confused about expenses and what to do with them, pop on over and have a read.
