Since I’m a current member of Barre Body Studio and consider it my home studio, so this won’t quite be the same as my typical studio reviews. Instead, I’m sharing five things you should know about barre. (If you want to learn more about the format of a barre class, you can read this post.)
Five Things About My Favourite Fitness Trend
Full disclosure: I’m not a huge fan of the word trend since when something is trendy, it usually means it’ll only stick around for a period of time and I hope barre sticks around for a looooong time!
1 – Don’t scoff at the weights
Yes, there are 2lb, 3lb, and 5lb weights available.
Yes, you can get a good workout with low weights. Why? Because the reps are intense.
My advice is to start with the 3lb and work your way up to the 5lb weights. Trust me, you’ll feel it.
2 – You’ll probably sweat
Since some of us were doing back-to-back workouts last weekend, there was initially some concern about what to wear (turns out, we got to put on our Adidas outfits, so it didn’t actually matter) and I made a comment of “oh, you probably won’t get that sweaty in barre.”
Why I said that I have no clue since I regularly drip sweat in class. Like, its gross. Super gross.
Of course these awesome ladies followed it up with “not sweaty?! liar” of which I was.
So yeah, you’ll probably sweat. (This would also be why I try to arrive at the studio early to take pictures because sweat.)
3 – You’ll curse your instructor at least once
True story: I once apologized to Megan for being an a-hole in class. Not that I was being rude, but barre-face was happening, and I may have also grunted.
I typically curse during glute work, and sometimes core work. Not stretching though, oh no, stretching is bliss.
4 – The shakes are for real
On Sunday we held reverse chair for a loooooooong time with Lanette (like, a super long time) and my legs were a-shakin’. I’m not talking about a small vibration, I’m talking bouncing up and down through no control of my own. After? They were spent!
This sustained stress causes the muscle to burn through its reserves of fuel to the point of exhaustion. Once that local fuel store is almost depleted, the muscle starts relaxing and contracting at a high rate of speed to conserve the remaining energy and help you remain in positions for the last reps
In translation: shakes are building your muscle endurance, which is a good thing no matter what you do for fitness away from the barre.
5 – You’ll leave wanting more
I love the feeling of being tired, sore, sweaty, and energized, and that’s exactly how barre makes me feel.
I’ll admit I’m a bit of a barre pusher and try to get everyone to come to barre with me, but that’s because of how much I love it, and I want you to love it too!
“Oh, you’re visiting on a Wednesday, great, that’s the day I do barre, so you can come to a class with me.” I’m a pusher 😉
Now, for the fun stuff. Barre Body Studio graciously provided each of us with two free 1-class passes, and I’m going to be giving mine away. If you so choose, I’ll even come to the class with you! If you don’t win, you can use COWGIRL10 to save $10 off a 10 pass card, or a 1-month intro pass (into is for new clients, but anyone can take advantage of the 10 pass savings).Barre so hard! 5 things you can expect to happen when you take a barre class #sweatpink #barrestarClick To Tweet
Last, and not even close to least!, a huge thank you to Marlo and Tara for helping to arrange the class, and Lanette for coming in on Sunday to teach us yahoos 💛
