One week ago I received my first ever box from Hello Fresh, another meal delivery service.
I’ve talked about Chefs Plate previously, and was excited to try out another service that would save me from needing to go to the grocery store. Actually, I don’t so much mind the grocery store, but I do mind meal planning, especially when it’s just me. I do my best to eat a balanced diet with protein, whole grains, and lots of fruits and veggies, but that requires planning. If left to my own devices, I’d probably just eat cheese and crackers for dinner forever.
Leslie and I had a conversation this weekend wherein she lamented about cleaning, and I did the same about tidying. So I just need to find someone who will be happy tidying up after me and making meal plans, so I can clean, cook, and grocery shop. Sounds fair, right?!
The first meal I cooked from my delivery were burgers with chimichurri and coleslaw. It was late, and I was starving, so I didn’t get any pictures, but they were delicious. I was a bit nervous about pan cooking the burgers (it was too cold and dark for me to want to BBQ) but they turned out really well, and all the flavours were awesome. I didn’t add any of the regular burger fixin’s and I really don’t think they needed it.
Next up was the warm farro salad with shrimp and vegetables. Again, this came together really quickly, and aside from the arugula not being in the best shape (whomp) everything was fresh and delicious. I ate half for dinner and took the other half for lunch, and it heated up really well.
Finally I made the stuffed chicken breasts with mashed sweet potatoes. I don’t regularly mash sweet potatoes, but after this meal, I might start doing it more often. I found the spinach and feta portions to be stuffed in the chicken breasts a bit off (I had lots left over that couldn’t be reused because my hands had been touching the raw chicken in order to stuff) but other than that, everything was awesome. I have a fear of burning my hand off when I put pans in the oven, and I’m glad to say that didn’t happen!

Winner: Tie. I liked the boxes as they fit in my fridge well, but found that the tight packaging caused the arugula for the salad to become squishy. Ew.
Chefs Plate: able to pause subscription and place orders weekly as needed
Hello Fresh: need to remember to skip individual weeks, or cancel account
Winner: Chefs Plate
I really enjoyed trying out Hello Fresh, but I think Chefs Plate is a better value overall. I don’t order every week, but I think it’s a great option to have, especially when I come home from being out-of-town and don’t want to survive off takeout.Want to try a new meal delivery service? What has been your experience with meal delivery services?
Note: I used my own money to pay for the service, but did use a referral code and received a discount. I was under no obligation to post a review, but because people were interested, I thought it would be helpful to compare the two services.
