I’m really excited I was given the opportunity to partner with Brooks Running to share the love surrounding Global Running Day.
Kaella, Becky, and I kicked off the celebration at the Calgary Marathon We Run Social meet up by handing out tons of fun gear from Brooks – including customized Global Running Day bibs (if you don’t yet have your own, be sure to print one off and head out for a run today!).
My initial plan for 2016 was to have it be the year of PRs.
I was going to go into the year well trained coming off of Dopey, run a strong half in Calgary and aim for a half marathon PR at SeaWheeze and a marathon PR in the fall.
For those following along, it’s pretty obvious none of this has happened.
I went into Dopey super undertrained and then took almost 2 months off from running. I returned far too eager, running two races in two weekends and wound up injured again.
I spent a month going to physio nearly every week and at the end of April/early May returned to running.
This time, I’ve been taking things slow. While I have participated in four races in May, I raced none of them, choosing instead to enjoy it and run with friends instead.
I also have a running partner. We aim to meet twice a week, typically Tuesday and Thursday, for a run. We have no pace or distance goals, choosing instead to enjoy running and chat throughout.
And you know what? It’s been wonderful.
This is a completely different running experience than I’ve had in the past. I have no training plan, no time goals, no unnecessary pressure to run X distance in Y time. I’m free to just get outside, run, and enjoy the process.
Now, I do think I’ll eventually get out and push for PRs, but I know this isn’t the year to do it.
This year my body and my mind want to enjoy the miles and run merely because I can, not because I’m pushing for a goal.
Whenever I get hung up on this not being the year I hoped it would be, I remind myself that I get to run and hopefully, I’ll get to run for the rest of my life. That, friends, is more important than a PR.
