Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadians out there! I hope you’re spending a beautiful fall day with family and stuffing yourselves full of turkey today!
Me? Well I’ll be driving the 7ish hours home from Kelowna and will curl up on the couch with Merlin and some takeout for the evening.
This weekend marks four weeks until Ragnar Las Vegas, so let’s take a peek at how my training did (or didn’t) go this week.
Monday – rest day
Tuesday – 1 mile 🙁
Wednesday – Walked
Thursday – walked 🙁
Friday – drove to Kelowna
Saturday – 5k; visited wineries
Sunday – BMO Okanagan Half Marathon
Total mileage: 26.1km
Okay, so my training wasn’t stellar this week. I was pretty exhausted on Monday, and I knew if I even tried to go for a walk I’d end up in tears, so it 100% wasn’t happening. Instead I had a date with Adam Levine and The Voice.
Tuesday I had my run gear packed and I set out for what I hoped would be a 6k to be followed up by an evening run. One mile in and I knew it wasn’t going to happen. I’ve been going back and forth on a pair of shoes of mine. I could never decide if they were causing issues, or if it was just a fluke. Well after my shins started screaming at me (and they’ve been fine for a while) I walked the rest of the way back.
Unfortunately on Wednesday my right leg (also know as my jerk leg) was acting up – again, most likely because of my shoes. With a long drive (which also aggravates my legs) and a half marathon on the books for the weekend, I went for a long walk in supportive shoes instead of running. I decided to pull out my KT tape and ice my legs a bit Wednesday evening in the hopes of fitting in one run on Thursday. (Knowing my mileage was down it was tempting to do two, but since my leg was cranky I also didn’t want anything to turn into an actual injury).
The run on Thursday also did happen. Well, I tried, but it was a massive fail. I made it about half a kilometer before I stopped. My shins don’t feel like shin splints yet, and I’m trying to keep it that way by stopping and walking.
I always struggle with a run after two days off, so I knew I had to get out for a quick shakeout run on Saturday even if I really didn’t want to. I love running in Kelowna as the scenery is beautiful.
After that we picked up our race packages and headed down to a few wineries (more to come on that tomorrow!) before heading back to rest and watch movies before waking up bright and early on Sunday.
I made sure my sister put her bib on the right way (front!) and off we went to my 10th half marathon and my sister’s first 10k! Such an exciting day!
Given my super low mileage this week, I really had no idea how I’d feel during the race. I knew the course well (my third half, and fourth time time on the course) and wasn’t racing, it was all about getting in the miles for Vegas.
I promised my sister pumpkin spice scones and I was craving eggs after, so we grabbed food before resting and relaxing before our fancy pants dinner that evening (post coming Wednesday!).
While my running may not have been on par this week, I did have a fabulous weekend with my sister and even managed to squeak in a quick visit with my dad before he headed off to run the Victoria Half (I’m hoping to run Victoria next year – anyone want to come with?).
How did your training go this week?
