Sunday morning dawned early, and cold.
In true Calgary fashion, we slammed head first into near winter temperatures overnight, and I had a 10km race on the calendar.
Since the weather thwarted my plans at a long run on Saturday, I was hoping to run before and after the race on Sunday to get in as many miles as possible before we went for brunch after the race. I have to admit, the brunch was powering me through the race.
Once we grabbed our bibs (quick and easy and no line in the rain) the girls sat in the car and I braved the cold, wind and rain and managed a 4.25km warm up before the start of the race.
Jen and I decided to run together as she ran 15 miles the day before and I was using it as my long run, so I wasn’t looking to race on Sunday.
The race started uphill and into the wind, and I can’t say that was fun. Fortunately, we turned and headed away from the wind and much of the race was quite sheltered.
Then it was time to run with the horses!
The course was changed a bit since two straight days of rain had made the grass between the turnout pastures not great for running, but we were still able to run with the horses. They had a great time roaring up and down the fences while we ran by.
Of course, Jen and I stopped for a selfie with the horses.
Jen and I cruised along and chatted for the whole race. It was great to have someone to run with as when we thought we were headed toward the finish, we ended up turning away from the finish and back into the wind. Understandable to get the distance in, but I’m glad I had someone with me to complain with 🙂
We were both really surprised at the time on the clock when we came upon the finish. Our official time was 1:02:02 and the distance measured about 9.7km. A bit short due to the course changes, I certainly didn’t mind.
It was a cold day for the runners and I can imagine it was also a cold day for the volunteers, but everyone we came across was smiling and cheerful.
I’m crossing my fingers my weather jinx lets up in time for the race in October, although if it is cool and rainy, I’ll know for sure that its me.
What’s your next race?
