This past weekend I ventured back to Vancouver after two years away (far too long in my books) to run my fourth SeaWheeze (I’m still sad I didn’t know about it the first year and that I had to miss last year) half marathon.
Instead of flying in, I drove from Kelowna, as I had spent the previous week there visiting my dad. I left Thursday after breakfast and drove the four hours through the smoke to Vancouver. I had a bit of time to kill before picking Kelly up from the airport, so I went to the mall and managed to find myself a lululemon rain jacket on sale – great timing, too, since it poured rain in Calgary on Monday!
Soon it was time to head to the airport, meet Kelly, and check into our hotel. Once checked in Kelly and I enjoyed some local beers while waiting for Lexie to arrive. Then it was time for dinner and frose from Cactus Club. We went to bed far too late for our 4:30am wake up call to attempt to hit up the SeaWheeze Showcase store in the morning.
I surprisingly had a great, albeit short, sleep. We all rolled out of bed, found a 24 hour coffee shop, and made the 30 minute walk to the Vancouver Convention Centre. We were amazed to see how close to the front of the line we were! We killed time by grabbing food, taking pictures, and making friends in line.
Before we knew it, we were in the store!
Let me take a moment to recognize just how totally ridiculous it is to stand in line for 2.5 hours in order to spend money on clothes. I know. I get it. I also embrace it as part of the race experience.
Are there some parts I don’t love?
Of course. I don’t love the people reselling the limited edition items for four times the price on eBay (items I would have loved to own and wear). I don’t love people trying to cut in line just to buy clothes.
Yup. That’s it. Haha.
I had my eye on a few of the pieces from the preview released by lululemon, and managed to snag a few tops before calling it good.
Lexie, Kelly, and I had hoped get our hair braided, but it turns out the braiding wasn’t around on Friday, so instead we had our nails painted and then met up with Becky and the crew for a fabulous brunch/lunch. I even enjoyed two beers because it was early enough that I felt confident I’d be able to adequately hydrate, and, well, it’s vacation!
After lunch we opted to head back to the hotel and enjoy a bit of downtime before heading back to the plaza for yoga.
We snacked, and enjoyed more beer, and Kelly and I picked up some gelato before sunset yoga at 7pm. This practice was absolutely perfect. I was feeling tight and sore from walking almost 20,000 steps that day and yoga was exactly what my body needed (and it probably needs more of it more often.
Finally Bri arrived and the six of us headed into Gastown for dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Finally, at 1opm, we made our way back to the hotel. Bri and I opted to walk and happened to run into Crystal as she arrived in Vancouver. I’m so glad I saw her as this was the only time I managed to run into her all weekend!
All too late we were back at the hotel and it was time to lay out my outfit for race day, chug some water, and set my alarm.
