If you’re not aware, Saturday was the date of the US Olympic Marathon Trials. I’m absolutely 100% Canadian, but running is running and I was so excited to see the outcome.
Except…..I was flying to visit my dad.
Saturday morning instead of chilling at home, drinking coffee, and watching the Olympic trials (okay American trials and yes, I’m Canadian), I was boarding a plane to visit my dad and sister.
After I landed, we drove straight to see my sister.
In the airport, I tried to get the NBC channel on my phone, but apparently that only works if I’m connected to my home internet. Rather unhelpful.
So I follow along as best as I can on Twitter. (I tuned in late, obviously, because flying)
I know Shalene and Amy are in the lead. And Galen Rupp is leading the mean. Wait. What?! Rupp is leading?!
But what about Kara. WHERE IS KARA?! How is she running?!
At one point she was in third, but now Desi is. Shoot. I like Desi. But……..Kara. Kara, I love. Before I really knew much about the running world I read about Kara and Paula Radcliffe running together while pregnant and it was decided. I would always cheer for Kara.
I cried with her during New York in 2014. (Seriously. That interview with her and Colt killed me).
When she signed with Oiselle, I cried and jumped for joy. Kara and I were on the same team! Kara doesn’t know me from a hole in the wall, but she named her boy my hypothetical boy name, so we’re obviously BFFs and she just doesn’t know it yet.
Where was Kara.
How many seconds behind Desi?! How was she running?!
Ugh. Twitter was so unhelpful.
I tried to carry on the requisite family conversation but DIDNT THEY KNOW THE OLYMPIC TRIALS WERE HAPPENING?!
Driving still to my sisters.
The men were nearly done. We were nearly there.
I hop out of the car.
“Do you have NBC?!”
“The channel. NBC. You have it, right?!”
“Ummm, I dunno”
“The silver one?”
I’m a peach.
I find the channel just in time to see Rupp and his janky singlet cross the line followed by Meb.
How can we not love Meb?
“He’s 40. How amazing is that?!”
“Ummm, sure. Are you going to make a sandwich?”
“Why is NBC interviewing the men?! Don’t they realize there a race going on?!”
I go make a sandwich.
“I’m not leaving to see your horse until the women are done”
I move to the couch.
Amy looks great. Shalene looks like she’s locking up.
Ugh. Where is Kara?!
Shit. There she is. Oh no. She looks like she’s struggling. Her head is bobbing. Oh dear.
With every part of my being, I want her in third. I don’t want to wish ill on Shalene or Desi, but I really want Kara in third. Maybe Kara can run the best 3 miles of her life? Oh, but she looks like she’s having a hard time.
I love seeing Amy and Shalene together. I wonder what they’re talking about. Amy keeps looking back at Shalene.
Ugh. Stupid announcers wondering if Amy is going to break. They’ve obviously discussed this. They’re training partners. That’s a conversation you have long before race day. No one would leave a partner behind before discussing it.
Secretly I hope they cross the finish line holding hands.
Okay, can I get an update in third, please?
Shit. Kara stopped making up time on Desi.
Holy shit Desi is catching Shalene.
She caught Shalene. Damn.
Oh. Amy, you get that finish line, girl. Wow. Amazing.
Here comes Desi!
Uh oh. Here come the tears (from me), Amy yelling at Shalene to cross the line.

Oh man. Yeah. She was locking up. I’m glad she held on to the line.
She looks like she’s trying not to cry. It’s okay. I’m crying.
She doesn’t know me from. A hole in the wall, but I feel like she’s my soul sister.

Knowing Oiselle had 18 women in the trials (the most out of any team) and had the best cheering section at the race makes me so, so proud to be a part of the team. While I’ll never break any records, and may not ever make it to Boston, I know I have a crew of amazing women supporting me every step of the way.

We’re all soul sisters.
