Disclaimer: I’ve received a complimentary entry into the Heroes Behind the Heroes race at Spruce Meadows in exchange for promotion and reviewing the race. As always, all opinions are my own and I wouldn’t be participating in the event if I didn’t believe in it.
Canada Day 🇨🇦 is two weeks away.
Phrased differently, we only have one more 5-day week until we’re blessed with a 4-day week, and, if you’re in Calgary, likely another 4-day week thanks to Stampede and Parade Day.
Up until last year, I don’t think there was a Canada Day race in Calgary, which always seemed like a shame because I’m constantly hearing about my American friends participating in Fourth of July races, this is one of the reasons why I’m so pumped that Spruce Meadows has jumped on board the Canada Day Race train with the Heroes Behind the Heroes event.
Like all three races in the series, this race consists of both a 5k and a 10k; however, the 5k is a bit different. Instead of a mere 5k run, it’s a family friendly military inspired obstacle course.
I know when runners hear obstacle course we immediately think of those crazy difficult courses that involve electric shock and burpees, but I can assure you that is not the case with this event. It’s designed for fun and with all ages and abilities in mind. There are also members of the Lord Strathcona Regiment onsite to instruct and help participants through the course.
I mean, what better way to celebrate Canada Day than with our military, right?!
I typically sign up for the longer distance because sprinting a 5k makes me want to cry, but I’m going to be moving out of my comfort zone for this race and attempting the obstacle course, all while wearing my fantastic Canadian Flag skirt from ChaseThisSkirt. For those interested, the obstacles include: wall climb, polar plunge, vehicle maintenance (rolling tires), PT station (push-ups, jumping jacks), and more!
After completing your race, you’ll be treated to a pancake breakfast, and if last year was any indication, this breakfast will be delicious.
If you haven’t yet signed up, come and run (I use that term lightly) the obstacle course with me! I promise we’ll have fun and there will be lots of laughs while on course! You can also save $3 off your entry using the code CanadaDay2016 when you sign up (good for the 5k or 10k).
