I think this is the Spruce Meadows race I’m most looking forward to.
I was so sad I had to miss out because I was sick last year, so I’m especially pumped for a do-over.
To be honest, it hasn’t really felt like winter (not complaining) or the Christmas season in Calgary. We’ve had unseasonably warm weather (hooray! but it makes me a little nervous for what’s to come) and not a lick of snow in all of November. Now, I’m sure that’s going to change, and I don’t think I’d be sad if it were to snow in time for Dashing Through the Glow.
This 5k run or 2k walk (or, let’s be honest, you could just walk the 5k, too) is your chance to see the Spruce Meadows Christmas lights before the open to the public on December 11.
This event is also in support of Senior’s Secret Service and you’re asked to bring an item from the wish list which can be gifted to a senior in need.
The Senior’s Secret Service aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals 60 years or older who are alone or isolated in the community. Since my Opa passed away in 2015, my Oma lives on her own. She’s lucky enough to live in an assisted living home and has quite a few friends where she is; however, her grandchildren are spread out across the country and we don’t often have an opportunity to visit her as much as we might like. I’m so thankful organizations like this exist to give love and support to seniors in the community.
Please consider bringing a gift to a senior in need on December 9. If you’re local and have something you’d like to gift and aren’t able to make the event, please let me know and hopefully we can arrange a pick up 🙂
In addition to seeing the Spruce Meadows Christmas Lights before anyone else and helping seniors in need, you’ll also be treated to chili (both meat and vegetarian!) at the finish line and Big Rock will be sampling beers on site as well.
Warming up with chili and beer after taking in some beautiful Christmas lights sounds like an excellent way to end the event.
Since this is the last event of the season there will also be awards for Best Dressed (I have leggings on order from DGSG so I’m crossing my fingers they arrive in time!), Most Improved, and Top Finishers in 2016, and entertainment will be provided by Dixie Knights Christmas. If you attended the Oktoberfest run, you’ll know the entertainment at the finish was exceptional, so I anticipate nothing less this event. On Dec 9 run @Spruce_Meadows Dashing Through the Glow & support @SeniorsService in Calgary #runyycClick To Tweet
