You may not be aware of it, but this past weekend, history was made at Spruce Meadows.
Rider Scott Brash became the first rider ever to win the three equestrian major Grand Prix events and he did it in the same year securing the Rolex Grand Slam of show jumping. Or, the show jumping, Triple Crown, if you will. 2015 has been a great year for equestrian events.
In 2.5 weeks Spruce Meadows will be hosting the fourth and final 10k event of 2015 and closing out 40km in 40 years.
We’ll also see if I can make it three for three of cool and rainy 10k runs. Unlike Scott Brash, I won’t be awarded 1 million euros at the end of the day if it rains. #bummer
The chosen charity for the Oktoberfest Run is The Calgary Food Bank.
From the Calgary Food Bank website:
The majority of people we assist are working-poor Calgarians struggling to make ends meet. The Calgary Food Bank is not a government or United Way agency. We rely solely on the generous support of our community.
Because of countless thoughtful donations:
132,469 people were able to access emergency food during 2014
The Food Bank could provide food to 110 local agencies such as the Drop-In Centre through the Food Link program
486,080 meals and snacks were provided in one month to our agency partners
The Calgary Food Bank was able to send food to 63 food banks across Canada during emergencies and times of crisis
Years ago, I was able to volunteer at the food back, helping to pack food for individuals and learned the majority of people helped by the food bank are one-time users who need a bit of help through a rough time.
Unfortunately, there are more people in Calgary rough through a tough time than in previous years as there have been a number layoffs over the year.
I’m very excited that my mom will be running the 10km race with me in October! I was hoping my sister would also come up, but she’s decided to enter her horse in her first horse show that weekend! Use the code RunSM75 and save 10% off your registration fee.
Race day details:
Package Pickup: September 28 & 29 (times TBD – see the website for details)
Race Start: 1pm on October 3
Parking: $10 can be paid for at package pickup, or on race day (cash only)
Food: Once you’ve finished your 5k or 10k, enjoy the indoor beer garden with Big Rock beers and entertainment.
