Happy Monday from rainy Calgary, friends!
Jen and I were able to pick up our bibs and shirts from Strides on Friday afternoon (after we cried our way through Me Before You with Brie) and it was a quick and easy stop to grab what we needed. Jen and I live close to one another, so we decided to carpool to the race start.
Sunday was a bright and early day as Jen picked me up just after 6:30. She was running the half which started at 7:20, and I was running the 10k which started at 8. I knew I’d have to wait around a bit at the start and finish, but I wasn’t too worried about it.
When we first arrived we saw a long line up for the port-a-potties, but remembered reading that the field house at the track was open and the line was much shorter than the port-a-potties. Yahoo!
After Jen started, I wandered around, dropped off my back at back check and then made my way over to the starting line. A few minutes before the race started I thought I heard someone call my name, and then I saw Nicole! I knew she was running, but didn’t think to organize a time to meet up, so I’m super glad she found me 🙂
I didn’t have much in the way of goals going into this race since I haven’t really been training, and I definitely haven’t been racing.
I fell into a comfortably hard pace and kept Nicole and her husband in my sights and we ended up leap frogging one another for the race. I told Nicole I was hoping to run under 1:10 (I ran this race back in 2012 and ran a 1:07 with a massive cold, so anything faster than that and I’d be pleased).
Throughout the whole race I focused on staying out of my head and just focusing on running my race. I think one of my strengths as a runner is my ability to get out of my own head. It’s so easy to be focused on something hurting, or the weather, or a minor irritation, and those can certainly impact your race. I was without music and just kept my focus on maintaining a consistent pace throughout the race.
I haven’t been using my Garmin much, so instead I had RunKeeper going and in my pocket, so I’d occasionally hear my splits and I was super happy that I was running sub-6 minute kilometers since my pace has been in the 6:30-6:45 range for the majority of my runs. I guess I still do have a bit of speed hiding somewhere 😉
After hearing I was hitting consistent sub-6 minute splits, I decided to see if I could push and run under an hour. I knew it would be tight as the course was measuring a bit long for me (I also made zero attempt to run the tangents) so I’d have to make up some time on the back end.
I stopped for water once just before the 5k mark (there were two other stations on course, one at about 2.5km and one at 8km) and aside from a quick walk up an overpass, I managed to run the full 10k at a super consistent pace.
Once I was 2km from the finish, I knew it would be tough to squeak in under 60, so I focused on running strong and even.
The race finishes with the last ~200m on the track, and by this point Nicole and I were running together. I slowly started to open up my pace and push hard to the finish and Nicole surged to try to pass me, so I pushed even harder and we ended up in an all out sprint to the finish.
I’m not sure if there were any photographers there, but I really hope someone got a picture of the sprint to the finish, as we were both laughing and exhausted by the end!
Then it was time to get in line for pancakes! We had quite the wait, but that’s certainly not unusual for a Stampede pancake breakfast. The timing worked out really well as we were nearly to the front of the line when Jen finished, so she was able to come join us and save a bit of wait time.
After Jen and I enjoyed our pancakes (and scones from COBS Bakery!) we headed home.
I spent the rest of my day napping and reading, which was just what I needed.Race recap: A fun and festive 10k at the @StampedRoadRace! #runyyc #runchat Click To Tweet
Did you race this weekend?
PS – I’m still working on figuring out the blog issues from last week. On the plus side, I did not break my blog when uploading pictures! On the downside, it still went down a few times this weekend and seems to be loading slowly 🙁 Please bear with me. xo.
