Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably well aware that Starbucks came out with the Unicorn Frappuccino yesterday and people LOST THEIR MARBLES. (Or, as the lovely James Fell put it, “misplaced their excrement“).
Since then, I’ve seen a heck of a lot of posts about the OMG SUGAR AND YOU’RE GOING TO DIEEEEEEEEE of the frappuccino.
I mean, I get it. 76g of sugar is a freaking ton of sugar. But you know what, I’m buying it and having one.
Why? Why not?!
No, really, why not?!
Why is someone choosing to buy a pretty and fun frappuccino (most likely to post on social media because pretty) being shamed? Since when is that an okay thing to do?
I’m of the mindset that what we do frequently matters far more than what we do once.
Me? I ordered one tall because 1) I wanted to take a picture of it and 2) I wanted to try it.
A quick peek at Starbucks nutritional information shows that there are a lot of drinks on the Starbucks menu with more than 60g of sugar. So why are we focusing on one drink that’s available for less than a week? Because it’s an easy target? Because we want to show that we’re better than everyone because we didn’t order it?
No, for real, what gives?

So, if you want to try the Unicorn Frapp – DO IT.
Yes, I did. I drank half because I don’t love sweet drinks to begin with, but there’s also no harm in trying one. Then I fell into a sugar coma for the rest of the afternoon because, yeah, it did have a lot of sugar in it. But you know what?! I sure as heck don’t deserve to be shamed over it.
If you want to buy it? Buy it.
If you don’t? Don’t.

I could go on and on about added sugar in food in general, and about education about nutrition, etc, but I think that’s best left for another day. Are there problems in these areas?! Absolutely, 100% yes. But this isn’t the time or the place.
